One of the things I like most that I’ve seen in vintage Rolex is the open 6/9 date wheel. I really like the font and everything about the way those date windows look. I’m wondering, has Rolex completely retired those date wheels ? Open 6 and 9's flat 4's, flat top 3's, all part of the vintage date font on Rolex's up to about 1990ish Based on that experience, I'll estimate that the open 6's and 9's were phased out in the 1990 through 1993 time period. Based on that experience, I'll estimate that the open 6's and 9's were phased out in the 1990 through 1993 time period. I like those older date wheels that have single digit dates that are so wide they fill the window from left edge to right, like in the attached photo. Would anyone know if an open 6-9 but closed 26 date wheel on a 1972 Explorer 1655 (302xxx), is correct wheel for the watch and period? GMT-Master watches also have date windows, sitting as always at the 3 o’clock position and magnified by a Cyclops lens. The GMT-Master ref. 16700 date wheel has vintage-style “open 6” numerals up until 1992 when Rolex switched it out for closed ones.
Here is the general progression of the date wheels based on year and distinguishing characteristics: Early 1960’s to Middle 1960’s: round 3, closed 6 & 9, and flat 7. Middle 1960’s to Late 1960’s: round 3, closed 6 & 9, and hooked 7. Early/Mid 1970’s: flat 3 and open 6 & 9. Then, take your time to find period correct date wheel which you can fit at service or at your convenience. I can understand you wanting the open six and nine to complete the watch’s original look. I agree the bezel look okay.
I am investigating on the correct/approximate periods for the different date wheels for Rolex sport models recently. This is what I could find out by There is a "L" serial in the "FOR SALE" section and the date wheel has an open 6 date wheel. Just always thought ALL 16610's had the new style date wheel.
